They Say Get Back, We Say Fight Back:
Defeating White Nationalism In the Era of Trump

“History …is not merely something to be read. And it does not refer
merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great
force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are
unconsciously controlled by its many ways, and history is literally
present in all that we do …And it is with great pain and terror that one
begins to realize this. In great pain and terror one begins to assess
the history, which has placed one where one is and formed one’s
point of view. In great pain and terror, because, therefore, one enters
into battle with that historical creation, Oneself.” – James Baldwin

We begin our evening’s teach-in, with the most powerful documentary
“Motherland,” which fuses African history, culture, politics, and
contemporary issues, sweeping across the continent to tell a new
story of the glory and majesty of Africa. “Motherland” with its Pan-
Africanist analysis weans us from a white supremacist, Euro-centric
view of accomplishment and influence on global civilization. Along
with the instruction of literary critic, linguist, and anthropologist
Dr. Ivan Van Sertima they ground a people torn from their land,
community, family, culture, language and status in a glorious history
and civilization and posit the empowerment that comes from the
collectivity of Africans throughout the diaspora.

“It’s important for us to recognize that history is not in the past. The
purpose of our struggles is to extricate ourselves from the pull of
the past.” – Angela Davis

Our teach-in continues with: the Rev. Dr. William Barber, who is the
architect of the Forward Together Moral Movement, and Repairers of
the Breach, he’s Pres. of the North Carolina NAACP, author of the
Third Reconstruction, and considered the most important prophetic
voice in the country since the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King; and Angela
Davis, political activist, former political prisoner, academic and
scholar, and Tim Wise anti-racism activist, fighting the alt-right since
89, essayist and author of seven books on racism. They all discuss
what must be done to turn back the racist Trump program and
advance the quest against white nationalism and for freedom, for
self-determination and power.
